INDIAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY
Nominations for IMS Awards (2005-2006)

Indian Meteorological Society is pleased to invite nominations for various awards conferred by IMS for the year 2005-06. The nominations alongwith copy of research papers which meet the eligibility criterion and Biodata of the author (s) for following awards may be submitted by 15th June, 2008:

1. Dr. B. N. Desai
The award is given to the outstanding work by Indian authors for papers published in the field of Tropical Cyclones in Indian seas and the Southwest Monsoon. The award carries cash a sum of Rs. 5000/- and a citation.

2. Sh. J. Das Gupta Award
The award carries a cash sum of 1000/- and a citation and is awarded for outstanding work by Indian authors published in Indian Journals in the fields of Meteorological Instrumentation, Meteorological Telecommunications, Methods of Observation, Meteorological Satellites and Meteorological Information Technology.

3. V. Bhavanarayana Award
The award is conferred on the authors of the best paper published in Vayu Mandal. It carries a cash sum of Rs. 5000/- and a citation.

4. Prof. A. D. Vernekar Award
The award is given to the outstanding work in the field of "Area of modelling land surface & Atmospheric and/or oceanic processed which influence the Indian Monsoon variability on the time scales of month to millennium", for papers published in the Indian or Foreign Scientific journals or publications of the Indian Meteorological Department by Indian authors. The award carries cash a sum of Rs. 10000/- and a citation.

5. Dr. P. Krishna Rao Award
The award carries a cash sum of Rs. 5000/- and a citation, is awarded for outstanding work by Indian authors published in Indian Journals/Bulletin in the topic of "Application of satellite data for environmental uses (atmospheric, oceanic, disaster mitigation etc). The author's age should be below 35 years. Age to be determined on the first date of the first month of the period of issue of the publication of the Journal/Bulletin.

6. Sir Gilbert Walker Gold Medal
The award is to be given biennially to an eminent Indian or foreign scientist of international recognition in the field of monsoon studies with no bar on the age and nationality. The Prize money comprises of a Gold Medal (weighing 50 gm/ 22c Gold) and a citation. The selection will made by a judging committee with IMS President and minimum two Fellows of IMS as members. Nomination will be invited through letters to institutions and publication in international bulletins. Sir Gilbert Walker, the legendary meteorologist who did pioneering & monumental work on long range forecasting of Indian monsoon, was the Director General of India Meteorological Department for 20 years (1904-1924).
