Scientific and technical Proceedings

                  TROPMET 2007, has been organized for the first time in the  beautiful city of lakes,  viz. Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The symposium “Advances in Meteorology and Their Applications”  held at the Academy of Administration, Bhopal during 17-19 December 2007, was inaugurated by H.E. the Governor of  Madhya Pradesh,    Dr. Balram Jakhar on 17.12.2007.  H.E., the Governor,  stressed  about the need of accurate weather forecast  for sustainable development  and advised the scientific community to develop meteorological products useful  for the public in general and  farmers, in particular.   The vast traditional knowledge pool available in our country can be utilsed for achieving the goal.  is HHHis kind presence enthused the young scientists and scholars who have assembled to present their scientific findings.

                   Dr P S Goel, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Chairman Earth Commission gave holistic view of integration of earth,  atmospheric and ocean sciences and plan of the Ministry of Earth Sciences to modernize  meteorological services  which includes  enhancement of computing power, dense network of observation from land,  ocean and atmospheric sensors; and high resolution  global and regional   weather model.  He also emphasised  on the need to develop ensemble models for forecasting districtwise weather phenomenon to advise farmers for  improving agricultural production  with timely  availability  of agrometeorolocal advisories.

                    Dr R K Datta, Vice-President, Indian Meteorological Society,  gave history of   Indian Meteorological Society, which has completed 50 years of its existence. He referred to the  contribution of IMS  to  spread awareness and development of scientific skills  among the meteorological community.

                  Dr S D Attri, Secretary, Indian Meteorological Society   mentioned in brief about the various awards and honours conferred by the IMS. He conducted the award ceremony proceeding.  The following awards   were conferred:

His Excellency,  the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Dr Balram Jakhar presented Honorary Fellowship to Dr. P.S. Goel, Fellowships to Dr. U S De and AVM  (Dr) Ajit Tyagi  for their for their pioneer contribution to the development of Meteorology and allied sciences. He also released   scientific Proceeding of  TROPMET 2007.

                  Dr P S Goel, Secretary Min. of Earth Sciences presented  Professor A D  Verneker Award to  Dr R. Krishnan,  Dr B N Desai Award to Dr K Prasad and Dr Y V Rama Rao for their  scientific contribution.

Dr S D Attri was recently felicitated by   the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr Manohan Singh  for his contribution to the work of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is the joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007.   Dr   Goel  honoured Dr Attri for his outstanding contribution.

Sh Bhupal Sing, Vice Chancellor welcomed   H. E. , dignitaries and delegates and Dr Dubey presented vote of thanks.

Scientific programme:

Scientific Sessions continued for 3 days where-in  around 105 innovative, enriched and  quality  research papers and lead talks  were presented  on observational techniques, forecasting methodology and sectoral applications like agriculture, climate change, natural hazard etc.

Plenary session

Plenary session was  chaired by -Shri Babu Lal Gour Honouble former  CM and presently honourable Minister for Public Sector Undertaking  wherein he advised to utilize traditional knowledge alonwith modern methodology and also presented   awards to Dr D P Dubey, convenor TROPMET 2007.  Hon’ble Minister was honoured by IMS with presentation of momento.  Dr LS  Rathore  gave overview of modernization plan of IMD  on Agrometeorology.. Dr S D  Attri, Secretary, IMS  conducted recommendation  session where valuable suggestions were given by delegates.  Sh  D K Malik  presented vote of Thanks.
