Workshop on

Mesoscale Modeling with special Emphasis on Mountain Weather Forecasting

29-30 July, 2002

New Delhi

Organized by:

National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting

Department of Science & Technology

BACKGROUND:

The Indian subcontinent is dominated by a wide variety of weather phenomena including monsoons, cyclones, western disturbances, Norwesters, squall lines and severe thunderstorms. These phenomena operate at different scales ranging from mesoscale to large-scales. The meso-scale and large-scale forcings, orography, vegetation cover and land-sea contrasts play important role in these processes. The unique features of the Indian subcontinent comprising of the Himalayas in the north and oceans on the three sides together with a wide variety of vegetation cover and desert areas present a challenging task for the weather forecasters and modelers. Attempts are being made for accurate forecasting of regional weather systems using  non-hydrostatic mesoscale models  and high resolution data assimilation.

The Himalayan region is frequently affected by eastward moving weather systems known as western disturbances. These weather systems give wide-spread rainfall and, at times very heavy snow fall associated with squall speed winds, hail and severe cold waves. The heavy snowfall and the gale speed winds can cause snow avalanches and land slides. Huge snow cover and ice conditions due to severe weather systems over the mountain regions result in potential hazards such as overflowing dams, floods, surging glaciers etc. The windstorms, hailstorms, thunderbolts and heavy rains are among other common climatic hazards in the mountain region. Sustainable management of resources of the mountain system is therefore crucial for the welfare of the people residing there.

Tropical Cyclones, Floods and Droughts are the other major meteorological disasters  which affect Indian region significantly. Tropical cyclones are one of the nature’s most violent manifestations and potentially the deadliest of all meteorological phenomena having taken toll of more than 2 million human lives during past 3 decades all over the world. It is unique combination of  violent winds, heavy rainfall,  mountainous waves and abrupt sea. The Indian sub-continent is the worst affected part in the world so far as associated death tolls are concerned.

The workshop on Mesoscale Meteorology is being organized at NCMRWF to focus on the above theme and to draw attention of scientists, disaster managers and policy makers to debate and devise improved methods and techniques for better prediction, preparedness and mitigation of the disasters  and to make public and media aware of the possible impact, consequences and precautions to be taken against such disasters.
